SGS Hungária Ltd. has held a successful conference about the audit obligation of energy to be carried out by 5th December, 2015 with the participation of the Ministry of National Development (NFM), the Hungarian Energy and Public Utility Regulatory Authority (MEKH) and other renowned specialists.

The 230 participants of the conference represented 130 or so known large companies, inter alia, MOL Nyrt (there was a presentation about their successful implementation of ISO 50001 energy management system), Magyar Posta, Magyar Telekom, Chinoin, the largest public water service providers, Magyar Suzuki, EON, ELMÜ, and ISD Dunaferr.

The presenters emphasized that beside the fight against climate change, the goal of the regulation is to increase competitiveness which can be achieved among other things by decreasing energy cost. Thus, any large company gains exemption from the energy audit – which must be renewed every four years – if they implement the ISO 50001 energy management system and certify it with an accredited certification body such as SGS.

The cost and time consumption of the implementation of ISO 50001 system management heavily depends on the initial level of energy management of companies. However, with those large companies that maintain a significant energy consumption, experience has shown, that a number of elements of the system works, so the implementation is possible with proper specialists and relatively low investment
